Don’t Make These 4 Mistakes This Halloween
So long summer! With the changing seasons now comes the storm of holiday madness…. starting with Halloween. I think we’re good to officially recognize Halloween as a national holiday right? Because the decorations, planning, and crazy excitement in my home puts it on par with Christmas morning. And to that point, the stress is also about equal.
Thinking back to past Halloweens, I’ve put together a list of lessons learned, or in other words, what not to do. Hopefully it will help you to avoid pitfalls this year.
Not investing in long underwear.
Being from the Midwest, I can’t remember a Halloween that wasn’t cold and rainy. Not fun when you’re about to take Queen Elsa and a bunch of Stormtroopers trick or treating. And yet every year I forget this and am scrambling to find sweat clothes that will fit underneath small costumes. Long underwear is a better option and can easily fit under anything. Go get some.
Not intervening when a bad decision is being made.
Of course you want your kids to have a say in the costume they wear. But as adults, we know what’s going to be practical and what’s not. For that reason, use your veto power when necessary. What I’m getting at is don’t let them talk you into this overpriced, oversized blow up dinosaur. If in fact it does work as expected (btw it won’t) and if your kid makes it through the door, he won’t be sitting or using his hands for the entire night.
Buying too much candy.
I know you hate to be the house that runs out of candy… But do you really?? Last year I actually went out and bought more candy when my supply got low. Needless to say I ended up with an almost full bag of Snickers and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. I’d much rather run out of candy than be eating leftovers for the next 6 months. This year when the candy runs out, the lights go off.
Losing track of a kid.
As soon as your kids grow out of the Radio Flyer wagon, they’ll be making a mad dash for every house in your neighborhood. Good luck keeping up especially if you have multiple kids. Halloween isn’t the only time I’ve been panicked wondering where my kids ran off to. It’s a common problem most parents can relate to. So here’s my shameless plug: Get a Jiobit Smart Tag so that you know exactly where your kids are. You’ll feel much better about splitting up or letting your older kids take off with their friends. It will bring you peace of mind all year long.
